The damaging effects of air pollution on the skin are becoming increasingly researched and outcomes this research now a major influence in selection development protective ingredients for skincare formulations. However, extensive has not yet been conducted into specific cellular defense systems that being affected after exposure to such pollutants. Research investigating is integral suitable interventions capable augmenting most impacted by pollutant exposure. following studies involved exposing primary human dermal fibroblasts different concentrations particulate matter analyzing its mitochondrial complex activity, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related 2 localization using immunocytochemistry protein expression electron transport chain proteins, sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) western blotting. Particulate matter-induced alterations both indicating oxidative stress, which was also complimented increased antioxidant proteins GSTP1/2 SOD2. seemed modify SIRT1 PGC-1α heavily regulation biogenesis energy metabolism. Given reported results induces damage through stress profound effect homeostasis, involving targeted antioxidants may help minimize downstream pollutant-induced originating from mitochondria.
